I'm all about shooting for myself, and almost 100% of the time, that involves shooting a ton of other people: friends, family, etc. For me, documenting people in what they do and what they are passionate about is one of my favorite things to do, and people's personalities are vividly revealed when they are immersed in one of their favorite activities.

I got asked by Phil, one of the creators and masterminds behind the Madbury Club, to come out and shoot a little behind-the-scenes action for their latest spread while I was in NY a couple weeks ago. We hung out for the afternoon while they were pulling their typical shenanigans shooting a small piece on Gourmet shoes. What they're doing is a unique process: essentially they are their own creative agency, directing and producing lookbooks and digital content for less mainstream companies...it's a very cool thing to watch. All of the guys have such a genuine, personable and unique character, it was blast getting to know them and just shooting around for a couple hours in Brooklyn. I'm looking forward to collaborating with these great guys more in the future.

Make sure to check the blog out for some of the latest style and music trends from the East Coast, the "Club" generates all their own original content and is sure to be a good read everyday.

It's amazing (and also unexpected) sometimes how effortlessly word and media travel these days with the help of the internet and social networking sites including twitter and facebook. When I shot Cavalier Essentials a few months ago I had no idea what it would lead to, and in fact, I wasn't expecting much either. All I knew was that I was ecstatic to work with a talented friend on a project and create the coolest outcome we could.

A few months later, through mostly word of mouth and Cavalier features in so many different places, response to or work has been overwhelming at times. Each week brings someone new asking us about it, and for that, Taylor Pemberton and I couldn't be more thankful and humbled. The project was featured on the Urban Outfitters blog a few weeks ago and also in the most recent issue of Nylon Guys

Without the help of friends and powerful online tools, a completely self-produced and funded project wouldn't be what it is today.

This past week was quite the experience. I traveled back and forth to New York twice in the span of 7 days for meetings and a couple shoots. I also took some time to bring my girlfriend with me on the first trip, to finally give us some time to travel together. The down time was completely necessary for the both of us. We even had an opportunity to do a shoot with my good friend Eliesa Johnson, and cannot wait to see the pictures. It was an interesting experience being on the other side of the camera for once!

While I was there I met with a few potential clients as well as one of my favorite photographers Joao Canziani. We had brunch in Brooklyn and had a great time getting to know each other, and it was an honor to hear such great advice from him as well as get a feel for his process, which I really respect. One of the qualities of Joao's work that I truly admire is his artful and careful approach to portrait work. Every portrait feels so calm and genuinely real for each subject. I particularly admire his project for Nike soccer, along with everything in his travel and fashion/lifestyle portraits. Definitely a photographer worth checking out: http://joaocanziani.com/www/

On Friday I did a quick shoot with the Madbury Club shooting some behind-the-scenes for their next feature. Their site is all about delivering fresh new content in the fashion, design, and music industries instead of featuring what has already been done. It was all about capturing the personality of the club and the guys involved, and it was a blast to finally get to know the guys behind the site, especially after they gave my shoot for Cavalier Essentials a full-fledged feature. Phillip Annand, the brains behind the operation, is an incredibly genuine and personable character who seems to know everybody and their mother, along with having a keen and critical eye for style and quality. I'm very excited to work with them in the future. You can view their post about it HERE.

Lots of exciting news to come in the next few months, thanks for reading!

Winter.

In Minnesota, we are far too familiar with the term and the adjectives that describe it and make you cringe and frown at the drop of a hat: frigid, baren, icy, cold...you get the picture.

Nancy and Grady were married January 26th, Grady being a long-time friend from the band I used to shoot back in my early days as a photographer. Far from the usual couple that would want pictures of themselves on their wedding day, they requested to shoot with me not one week after, but two weeks before their wedding. I'm sure you're scratching your head as to why, and to be honest, I was too. But when Nancy explained the importance of spending their winter wedding indoors with all of their friends and family, it completely made sense to me.

Two weeks before their wedding, in the dead of winter, we got together and I photographed them in their whole wedding attire. The entire shoot was effortless, and Nancy and Grady were ecstatic to have a couple hours together to let the thoughts of married life really sink in. Nancy eventually thanked me afterwards for giving her the time to calm her nerves before the big day. She explained that because I allowed them time to interact without any distraction with the big day looming, it made the whole process more real, meaningful, and surprisingly emotional.

And their wedding turned out beautifully, regardless of the grey sky overhead. It was a blast and we only ventured outside only once. But that is just the way Nancy and Grady wanted it, and I swear the wedding felt that much more intimate as a result.

Thank you Nancy and Grady, for trusting me with shooting these pictures for you, I had so much fun with you two through the whole process!

When I shoot, I like to keep things relaxed and spontaneous. Last fall I made a couple of small purchases for some cameras that I have been needing for far too long. I've found that it's necessary for me to have some sort of camera with me, especially while I've been traveling and on-the-go the past half of the year. Since most of the cameras I use are too big to fit in my pocket easily, I purchased a few smaller point and shoot 35mm cameras, the Fuji Natura and Yashica t4.

I love the small compact cams not just for their surprisingly good image quality, but also for how unobtrusive they are. It's so easy and fun to just pull one out and take a photo instantly, and then have to wait forever to see it. That's where the fun is: the wait. Waiting to see photos for weeks, maybe even months later makes the shots seem that much more real, especially events and things that are sometimes easiest to forget. I've begun to post a lot of these on my Tumblr, so feel free to check that out, but here are a few from my rolls last fall.

Using these film cameras not only allows me to keep that spontaneity alive in my work, but also keeps me testing and training my eye to see differently. As a photographer, I think that's an important step in the creative process and extremely crucial to perfecting and improving your style. Expect more from my work from last year, as well as in the future.
